Exterior waterproofing treats the source. The wall is excavated to the footing, cleaned and repaired, coated with a waterproof membrane, covered with drainage board and set beside a perforated drain in gravel, then backfilled.
It is more involved than interior systems, but it protects the wall from water and frost, and it makes sense when the wall also needs repair, when a basement is finished or when it is combined with a new addition.
